Writing Children’s Poetry - Part 5

by Patricia Tiffany Morris

Children’s Poetry and Prose

Have you ever written your thoughts as you think of a time from your childhood and the result pours out in poetry and prose?

I don’t remember when I wrote my first poem.

I am not sure if I consciously through about the form. But after a high school creative writing class, a college poetry journal, and my after 60 musings, I find most writing can be poetic and lyrical in style or form.

I imagine poetry to be the written expression of my breathing and living. The ebb and flow of an ocean lapping its tides as it cries for attention gives structure to the rhythm and music as much as language and thoughts of a child’s life.

Poetry soothes my weary spirit at times.

It rises and emboldens me at other times.

And the simple act of writing brings out the child in me.

What about you?

How do you relax?

What form or style do you write when you create?

Below is a children’s lullaby—a song set to poetry—as I remember what a dream may have been in my youth.

Try writing a song of your childhood.

Drop me a note and share what you’ve written. And if you’d like me to share your poem here next time, let me know that as well.

Happy writing, dreaming, and remembering.

Poem by Patricia Tiffany Morris Called Dragon Dreams. Text below.

Dragon Dreams

Sleep well, my little one.

Lay your troubles down and rest.

Close your eyes and greet the test

To slay the dragons in your dreams.

Let the lions be your friends

And the beasts be more like lambs.

Sleep well, my little one.

You no longer have to fight

Or worry through the night.

Leave your fears behind the veil

And wake to meet the day with hope.

Live well, my precious child.

Lay your troubles down and rest.
