Writing Poetry Reduces Stress - Part 4
by Patricia Tiffany Morris
Poetry Reduces Stress
Finding my stride in the various genres and activities and projects takes an amazing amount of energy as I grow older. My birthday approaches, and I wonder if I should simplify the activities I pursue and the genres I write. Would that process help me feel less stressed?
My husband would say yes. He agrees with less.
Sometimes I agree too. But something inside stirs with a wild, passionate eclectic, wide swatch of knowing that I enjoy life more when I have more to do.
I have a to-do list in bullet points and on my digital calendar that is unruly, untamed, and there is no end in sight. Perhaps I should rethink the creative plans from early 2025.
In addition, my goals constantly change. Shiny new events catch my attention. And I haven’t learned to say no with any sort of comfort or determination. So what’s more relaxing than writing poetry?
I haven’t found that yet. Perhaps enjoying a cup of coffee with rich butter creamer and watching the sun set or rise. Both are my favorite times. Both help me slow down and praise the Lord for all He has done and will do. Much like writing does for me. Scribbling colored notes in my sermon notebook ranks with the sunrise, sunset, creamer, and poetry.
Here are a few of the past poetry graphics I created for posting on Friday’s poetry challenge at The Poetry Arena on the X platform. A one-to two hour diversion from the rush of the world, or procrastination from some other task, gives me the energy and motivation to return to the check list.
How do you relax when you love to create?
Faithful Friends
Rise Strong
Together in this fight
Lifting brother’s loyal arms
The prize to beat all cost
And Claim
That loyalty resides
Clasping hands into the night
Hearts aim as kindred friends
Friendship
Steps confident and sure
Risking everything for love
This walk amends our path
Of Light
Befriends the lost and tired
Finding hope with common strength
The might we’ll never lose
Me And you
Faithful friends
Strength to Face Tomorrow
Quiet surrounds me
Circling, enveloping
A pause to fill me
To direct my senses
Solitude embraces
Like a soft falling snow
In a place all my own
To build my courage
Peace rests alone
Lifting hope before
Finding strength
To face the world
