Today is my birthday.
It’s also our anniversary. Every year. Yes, my husband chose to marry me on my birthday.
I can’t remember all the reasons, but our wedding day, intertwined with my birthday, gives me all I need during rough times as I trust in the Lord to work through us.
September hasn’t always been pleasant. I used to experience anxiety as school rolled around each year. My first boyfriend broke up with me on my birthday. High school brought anxiety at this time every season.
Leaving home during my mother’s extreme illness with diabetes and the loss of both of her legs seemed like the worst days of my life one September in the early 80s. And a foreign exchange trip during college as well as a summer trip to Sweden to visit relatives became a crossroads in my adult years. But it wasn’t until I came to a relationship with Christ that I came to learn how much I needed healing during the anniversary of my birth.
And each time my sister braved the storms around us to be with our mother, in spite of my fears, she reminded me of how Jesus would have shown me hope. It’s been over a year since my sister, Cherie’s death, and almost 40 since my mom died. I miss them terribly.
I could go on, but needless to say, my birthday week is steeped with sad and heart rending memories wired within from a trauma filled youth, but plucked from despair by God through a future hope.
And then I met my husband to be. Marv helped me turn this day in September into a celebration of life, love, family, and Jesus. He writes notes, composes poetry, and showers me with love so I don’t forget how much he, and God, love me.
Thank you, my man.
And thank you, Lord Jesus, for bringing my life to his. I am eternally grateful.
