Allow me to introduce the artsy tribe I meet with on Sunday afternoons.
Katy Kauffman’s MY ARTSY TRIBE, a private Facebook group of creative souls and artistic friends, gathers on Sunday afternoons to share a devotion and color a scripture verse while learning various lettering techniques.
I first met Katy in 2019 at the Blue Ridge Mountain Christian Writers Conference in Ridgecrest, North Carolina. Her affinity for card making and art projects caught my attention. I immediately knew this was someone I wanted to get to know better.
An artist and a writer, as I was, she met with me during one of the incredible opportunities to connect with agents and professionals in the writing world. Katy radiated Christ. And she offered resources and encouragement to fellow writers.
We spoke about greeting cards, art projects and ideas, ministry, writing opportunities, online social media connections, and sharing Christ through our work.
So when Katy opened MY ARTSY TRIBE on Facebook, I jumped into the circle of other artsy friends in the community of writers and creatives.
This week Katy features a tutorial of sorts and a blog post I wrote for the debut of her new website. It’s called, “Hand Lettering with Colored Pencils: Creating Highlights and Depth.” I will teach and demonstrate some of the techniques I use while lettering the Word of God and creating planning sheets in my bullet journal planner.

Hand Lettering with Colored Pencils: Creating Highlights and Depth

Hand lettering takes on a whole new look when combining markers and colored pencils in a bullet-dot journal. In the picture above, I lettered an inspirational verse from the Bible and drew a whimsical, funky house to illustrate Joshua 24:15 (NKJV), which says, “But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.”
Look at the word “serve”—notice the two-toned effect? And the word “will”—notice the black outline as a shadow around many of the words?
Colored pencils, specifically Prismacolor pencils, allow a lovely blending technique due to the wax base in these professional tools. While it’s difficult to produce blending and highlighting effects with pens and markers, combining colored pencils with markers yields a three-dimensional, glowing effect in drawings.
Take these steps to create this piece of Bible journaling.
